Learn to cook – Joburg cooking classes 2023

more than a year ago
As part of our annual resolutions, we all vowed to ‘eat healthier’ but it’s easier said than done, especially if you don’t know how to cook. Luckily, 2023 is the year Joburg learns to cook through a variety of cooking classes ranging from one-day workshops to hone your knife skills, to a 4-week programme transforming your dining disasters into a Masterchef masterpiece. Read on to find the ideal cooking class for you.

The Cookery by The Secret Jozi Chef
This fun cooking school offers themed lessons to groups. Recent classes include a Turkish-themed evening and a Greek evening preparing 15 classic dishes from souvlaki chicken to galaktoboureko (custard tart). The Cookery kitchen is located at The Woods Shopping Centre in Craighall, and classes run for about 4 hours. It’s essential to book early because their classes are often booked out months in advance.

Learn basic knife skills with What's Cooking Joburg
What’s Cooking Joburg
If you’re all thumbs when it comes to cooking (or no thumbs due to kitchen accidents) then this Basic Knife Skills workshop is for you. What’s Cooking hosts fun culinary workshops for small groups. Their latest workshop will teach you how to wield a knife properly and safely, and do all the fancy cuts that chefs use. Classes take place on Saturdays and run for about 3 hours, ending with a meal prepared together. Make sure to book online because classes are limited to 6 people per session.

Ché Gourmet
Fermentation expert Ché from Ché Gourmet is running an intensive workshop on fermented condiments and gut health. The workshop includes interactive demos on fermented sauces and pickles and a discussion of starters, fermentation techniques, and gut health. And of course, loads of fermented snacks like kimchi nachos and shots of milk kefir. Book online for the next workshop on March 4, 2023 which runs for 3 hours.

Delicious healthy creations at Vitality Heathy Food Studio
Vitality Healthy Food Studio
For a healthy but still delicious cooking class, try one at the Vitality Healthy Food Studio in Sandton. Their state-of-the-art kitchen can accommodate 22 students and new courses are added regularly. We attended the heritage braai class, trying our hand at asparagus with sherry-pineapple vinaigrette, Cuban mojo chicken legs, and spicy ginger scallion burgers, which were fun to make and even better to eat.

JHB Culinary & Pastry School
If you’re looking for a more in-depth epicurean experience, the JHB Culinary & Pastry School is offering a 4-week programme on Fundamental Cooking. Each class covers a culinary skill (like stocks and sauces) and incorporates a dish to showcase those skills – for stocks and sauces you’ll make an ostrich fillet with sweet potato puree, pea puree, glazed baby carrots and charred broccoli. Apply online for their next course which runs from March 4 - 25, 2023.
