Lindt High Tea at Piccolo Mondo, Michelangelo Hotel

If you prize boundless generosity when it comes to taking high tea then the Lindt High Tea at five-star The Michelangelo Hotel in the heart of Sandton is the one for you. Don’t be misled by the name because while the superb flavour of Lindt chocolates is incorporated into a range of delightful desserts, you don’t need to only love chocolate (although we will think you are weird if you don’t) to enjoy your afternoon here.

This buffet-style experience offers overflowing platters of exceptional sweet treats and a fine selection of savouries. Choices include a delightfully dizzying array of sushi, fishcakes, skewers of beef and vegetables, dainty salmon and cream cheese topped puff pastry and de rigueur crustless cucumber sandwiches.

The sweet selection is equally excellent and makes for some tough decisions. Luckily many of the cakes come in petite portions so you get to mix and match. Golden whirls of spun sugar decorate the sweet platters and the pastry chef here whips up a mean croque-en-bouche, a lavish dessert of choux pastry balls piled high upon one another and bound with caramel threads.

We asked for a recommendation and were told to try the carrot cake, which was light, perfectly moist and encased in a scrumptious cream cheese icing.

A special feature of high tea here is the birthday treat (by prior arrangement), a chocolate torte served impressively on a bed of dry ice that arrives at the table looking like a magic potion with Happy Birthday written in chocolate across your plate.

The tea selection is from Singaporean luxury tea TWG and includes classics such as French Earl Grey and Singapore breakfast tea and the refreshing flavours of Moroccan mint and Jasmine green tea. If you are more adventurous with your tea tastes choose the Silver Moon, an aromatic green tea blended with strawberries.

Another plus of this buffet-style high tea is that you get to move around the room as you find yourself repeatedly visiting the bountiful countertops, which might just count for exercise.
