Dlala Nje celebrates Mandela’s centenary with the Mandela Day Alhambra Clean Up, providing some TLC to The Alhambra Theatre, Doornfontein’s historical gem which is also fast approaching its centenary. Founded in 1921 as a silent-movie bioscope, The Alhambra Theatre was purchased in the 1980s by legendary theatre producer Pieter Toerien as a 37th birthday present to himself. Unfortunately by the 2000s the theatre shut its doors and remained largely neglected until 2017 when it was bought by a group of co-owners including Gordon Cook, the co-founder of design college Vega School and Thobile Chittenden, a social activist.

The vision is to transform The Alhambra Theatre into an education-arts hub and an inner-city oasis for kids. Join Dlala Nje this Mandela Day in helping bring the Alhambra Theatre back to life. Bring along painting supplies like bright colour paints, paintbrushes and rollers and help revitalise this heritage landmark described by the Sunday Times as “an unearthed time capsule”.
