Inspired by Sankofa, the mythical Ghanaian bird which has come to represent the return of the African diaspora, American saxophonist and activist Salim Washington takes to The Orbit stage alongside South African musical prodigy Afrika Mkhize for an evening that brings together American post-war jazz and South African sounds.

Tennessee-born saxophonist Salim Washington's's musical style is eclectic; influenced by master composers like Andrew Hill and Stevie Wonder, Washington also credits artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Mankunku Ngozi as inspirations. Meanwhile jazz pianist Mkhize has been described as “the exciting new face of South African jazz”. Afrika Mkhize started playing piano from the tender age of six and joined the prestigious National School of Arts by the age of 15. Since launching his career as a jazz performer Mkhize has also ventured into music production, producing award-winning albums for jazz icons such as Tlali Makhene and Sibongile Khumalo.
