Mphe Mphe ya Lapisa by Levy Pooe
Saturday Feb 20 - Friday Mar 12
10 Mahlathini St, Fordsburg
Titled Mphe Mphe ya Lapisa (taken from the seTswana idiom which translates as “the constant act of asking is tiring, it is better to have your own”) this new body of work presents an extension of Pooe’s ongoing themes of the relationship to urban space, and the practice of contemplative activities and rituals in public space, taking the streets of the city of Johannesburg as a source of inspiration.
In acrylic paintings and charcoal drawings Pooe depicts a range of characters and city scenes that ask the questions; What do we ask for? When do we ask? Who do we ask?, and From which spaces do we ask?
