Pianist, healer and composer Nduduzo Makhathini has been hailed as a leading light for the current generation of South African jazz. Winner of the Standard Bank Young Jazz Artist of the Year award in 2015, Makhatini has been described by leading jazz critic Percy Mabandu as playing with “a bright lyricism and a full sound pallet that gives him a markedly wide melodic vocabulary". Makhathini's unique style, which has a markedly spiritual focus, has seen him compared with late jazz pianist greats such as Bheki Mseleku.

At this concert Makhathini presents the next step in his musical journey, titled Umsamu. Drawing parallels between his music, ancestry and spiritual quest, Makhatini re-conceptualises the jazz concert as a sacred ground and place of worship. In Umsamu music becomes a transcendental force to bridge the gap between the seen and the unseen, with Makhatini taking well-loved pieces from his previous project iKhambi and reinventing them.
