Neighbours - Some African Modernists
Tuesday Sep 10 - Friday Sep 20
89 Central St, Houghton
With the assistance of Hollard Seguros and Itoo Artinsure, the exhibition features artworks from various private collections from across the region. Among the many highlights are abstract paintings produced in Zimbabwe in the 1980s and art from a private collection based in Maputo that includes works by acclaimed Mozambican painter Malangatana Ngwenya and his compatriot, influential architect, sculptor and painter Pancho Guedes. From Namibia, the work of John Muafangejo, internationally recognised for his woodcut prints, features alongside fellow Namibians, Adolph Jentsch and Fritz Krampe, while artists from Eswatini (Swaziland) and Botswana are also represented in this fascinating exhibition.
As Strauss & Co executive director Susie Goodman explains “our aim as South Africa’s premier auction house is to develop the connections with artists, galleries and museums in our neighbouring countries, in order to gain greater insight into the art-historical context of the exciting modernist period in global art history".
Given the recent flare-up of anti-immigrant sentiment in Joburg this exhibition highlighting the common art-historical threads shared through the southern African region couldn't have come at a better time.
Fri Sep 13 at 11:00: Join in a free walkabout of the exhibition led by Strauss & Co's art experts and curatorial team.
The exhibition is open daily - including Saturday and Sunday - from 09:00 until 16:30.
