Even in the middle of summer the sun still sets relatively early in Joburg (sunset on the longest day of the year is at 19:00) making this the perfect town to enjoy the sundowner hour and greet the arrival of dusk with a cool drink (or three).
This our pick of five great bars to head to to enjoy the Joburg sunset.
Take a mid-week break and enjoy the sunset view from this quirky bar in Kramerville, Sandton which opens every Wednesday evening for a sundowner party. Retro party music, a sunset view of Sandton's skyscrapers, plenty of craft beers and a wall to wall collection of covetable antiques and unusual curiosities from across the globe work together to help you forget that tomorrow is still only Thursday.
Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff
The city's most famous luxury hotel hosts a sundowner DJ session every Thursday with drinks served on the famous terrace at Flames restaurant. Service is top notch, the crowd well-healed and the fabulous 180 degree views over the city's urban forest to the north are unparalleled. In spring this is possibly the best place in Joburg to view the purple canopy of blooming jacaranda trees from above and chilled tunes from the DJ on the lower deck provide the perfect soundtrack to the evening.
Located on the second floor of the contemporary landmark building Trumpet on Rosebank's Keyes Art Mile, Mesh Club is Africa’s first curated members’ club. This stylish and exclusive work and play space for budding and established entrepreneurs opens its bar to the public every evening between 16:00 and 23:00. The view stretches all the way over the western suburbs towards the Magaliesberg and if that's not enough distraction there's also a fabulous collection of contemporary art to enjoy, which is also the inspiration for bar's cleverly designed cocktail menu.
EB Social Kitchen and Bar
You couldn't ask for a more novel setting then this restaurant set in one of the city's best bookshops. Led by much-awarded Australian chef Russell Armstrong, EB Social Kitchen is famed for its sophisticated but comforting plates of food inspired by Mediterranean and Asian cusines. For starters try the haloumi kataifi balls with lemon mayo, one of our absolute favourites. A great option if you have the appetite for many different tastes is to order the set-price chef’s selection of dishes. The excellent wine list showcases a broad range of South African wines.
A little garden in the sky, this cafe-bar on a sixth floor rooftop in the Maboneng precinct has a memorable urban view of the downtown skyscrapers and is at its liveliest on Sunday afternoons when the rooftop fills up with the local cool kids for the Sundays in the Living Room sundowner party with DJs keeping the weekend going until after sunset. (cover charges usually apply).
