One of celebrated South African playwright Athol Fugard's earliest works, Nongogo is a reflective and entertaining piece set in a 1950s township shebeen that is run by a former prostitute turned shebeen 'queen' known as Queenie. A story of unrealised romance, the play's central characters - Queenie, the travelling salesmen Johnny who she falls for and Patrick a jealous pimp - are each gripped by a futile longing to belong and be loved as they spend their evenings in the shebeen drinking to remember their happier times and to forget their sorrows. The play is showing as part of the Market Theatre's Fugard season and is directed by acclaimed theatre director and actor James Ngcobo.
