Supported by the US Embassy, The Market Theatre celebrates Black History Month this February with a South African production of the critically-acclaimed drama One Night in Miami, directed by award-winning director James Ngcobo and with choreography from the outstanding Gregory Maqoma.

The play, which premiered in Los Angeles in 2013, is a fictional account of a meeting between four African-American icons in 1964 and is described as "a critical reflection on different aspects of black power and historic issues that remain as relevant as ever".

On the evening of February 25 1964, four friends – Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, 'King of Soul' Sam Cooke and star NFL footballer Jim Brown – gather to celebrate Clay’s surprise win against Sonny Liston and his new title as World Boxing Champion. Quickly they find themselves in the middle of a rancorous debate that illustrates the varying dreams and aspirations of the nascent icons.

The four iconic black men share together a night of triumph, history, brotherhood and laughter, while the audience is challenged to face the inequalities of the past that continue to stalk the present.
