Every year in partnership with the American Embassy The Market Theatre hosts a play to mark Black History Month (February). This year's Black History Month play kicks off a little later than usual and is being staged at the theatre throughout March.

Pass Over explores the hopes, challenges and spirit of two young Black homeless men who dream of a promised land that doesn't include deadly issues such as police brutality and white supremacy. The play is written by American playwright Antoinette Nwandu, directed by the always impressive James Ngcobo and stars Hungani Ndlovu, Charlie Bouguenon and Khatu Ramabulana in the lead roles.

Written in response to the shooting of Black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012 (an event which more than mirrors the 2020 killing of George Floyd that sparked protests across the world), it was also in part inspired by Waiting for Godot and the biblical Book of Exodus. A powerful tragedy about race and the failure of the American dream, it has been described by critics as "theatre for the heart and head".

Covid-19 theatre protocols: To align with current protocols the theatre seats 50 with social distancing and evening start times have been made earlier (18:00) to accommodate travel around the curfew.
