Stevenson gallery in Parktown North presents the latest solo exhibition by artist Paulo Nazareth, Intaka Endala Ephezu Komkhombe Omhlophe. Translated from isiXhosa as ‘an old bird on top of a white rhinoceros’ the title is an idiom alluding to the questions that arise around what is perceived as valuable and what might rather be considered parasitic, and the exhibition uses crops of maize as a metaphor to explore this paradox.

The body of work, which follows on from his series A Maze, comprises of sculpture, installation, drawing, photography and paintings, all centred around the questions of death, growth, migration and displacement. Alongside crops of black and white maize, intergrated into a series of brick mazes installed in the gallery, central to this installation is the imagery of birds, particularly the pink flamingo, which is integrated as an emblem of safety and protection.
