The World of Beer tour is a light-hearted, multi-sensory experience tracing the history of all things beer, from ancient Egyptian times to the present day. Your tour starts with an amusing cartoon film set in ancient Egypt (where beer was invented thousands of years ago) before moving onto a replica rural African village to learn about how the traditional sour African sorghum beer umqombothi is made. Tasting a fresh batch of this unusual brew afterwards is of course part of the experience too.

The tour then traces a history through Europe's mediaeval brewers before landing in a recreation of gold rush Johannesburg in the late 1880s. Highlights of this section of the tour include the chance to enjoy a crisp, cold Castle lager in the authentic replica of a 19th-Century South African pub and a swinging 1970s shebeen. The interactive tour then ends with a lesson on how beer is made today (including a chance to taste some real hops) in the replica brewing hall before winding up at the World of Beer's rooftop bar for drinks.

Tours last 75 minutes and leave every hour, seven days a week. Admission includes one beer during the tour, a souvenir glass, two drinks vouchers that are redeemable in the Taproom after the tour and bar snacks. A range of special packages including beer tasting tours and a tour of the Alrode Brewery in south east Joburg are also available. Tickets can be booked online.

The SAB World of Beer is a stop on the City Sightseeing bus Red City route and you get a discount on your tour by showing your bus ticket.
