One of South Africa's most prominent and influential artists, Sam Nhlengethwa's new body of work is a tribute to the city of Joburg, one that resonates deeply with the artist as he depicts some of the scenes he has absorbed during his time spent living and working in the city.

Titled Joburg Selected the exhibition features a selection of mixed media works on canvas and lithographic prints that depict architectural monuments and buildings that are most valuable to Joburg, such as Constitution Hill, Ponte City and the Market Theatre. These buildings, he says "become the persona... They have their own stories and relate to our history in various ways.”

This exhibition seeks to serve as an archive of the city's architecture and preserve the existence of these buildings, at least in painting and collage, as many of these structures may potentially cease to exist in the future. "It's about memory, more than just architecture," he says referencing the work of the late photographer David Goldblatt who similarly captured iconic structures that no longer exist in the city today.
