Joburg Sightseeing – Keyes Art Mile, Rosebank

27 Nov 2017

Within walking distance of the malls of Rosebank, at the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Jellicoe Avenue is the start of Keyes Art Mile, an exciting new development set to revitalise a formerly quiet street and create a new hub of art and design. The first phase of the new development is the Trumpet building (opened late August 2016), an impressive contemporary space, with galleries, chic design stores and cafes opening out onto the street, a vast entrance hall that is curated as an art exhibition space, a members club upstairs, and on the rooftop, the chic Marble restaurant and bar.

Once the humdrum offices and garage space of a major petrol company, Trumpet building, now flanked by wild olive trees, and art galleries to the north and south is set to turn the fringe of Rosebank into one of Johannesburg's most visionary art and design-focused locations.

Here's our guide to Trumpet building on Keyes Art Mile.

CAFES, BARS AND RESTAURANTS

MILK BAR Named after Abu's Milk Bar in downtown Addis Ababa, the Milk Bar is a retro-chic Africa-themed café. A riot of colour, and a celebration of African-made items, the decor is fresh and fun, exclusively Made in Africa and refreshingly free of colonial nostalgia.
BGR Two Americans missed the taste of home so much that they decided to open a burger joint. Ground beef patties with no basting, super fresh buns (or the Paleo alternative of a lettuce wrap) and basic toppings are the simple formula that makes BGR's burgers a hit.
MARBLE This 250-seater restaurant, with a lounge and bar separated by a gorgeous glass wine cellar, offers surprisingly intimate seating and
a wraparound balcony with views stretching all the way out to the Magaliesberg mountains. The heart of star chef David Higgs’s restaurant is the live-fire grill in the open kitchen, the spectacular flames cooking up everything from meats and seafood to freshly baked bread. Plans are going ahead for a butcher shop and charcuterie downstairs. Closed 23.12-27.12.
THE BUTCHERY BY MARBLE This butchery by top restaurant Marble (a few floors up) at Keyes Art Mile is an exquisite and unique destination that also doubles as a wine bar. Even non-meat eaters might appreciate the showstopping displays of the finest cuts of meat that will make you view a carnivorous lifestyle in a whole new light. With a boutique feel, and a beautiful range of kitchen accessories that include custom-made linens and ceramicware this is a stop worth making on any food-lover’s itinerary.
MESH CLUB This curated members' club must surely be one of the most chic spaces to meet in Joburg, with its plush interiors, multiple versatile spaces, harvest table lunches by top chef Dave Higgs and cocktail menu inspired by the club's art collection.
