From small neighbourhood delis to Bryanston Market's online organic grocery delivery service there are loads of ways to do your essential grocery shopping and support small businesses too.

Here are ten small Joburg businesses who you can support during lockdown by shopping for your groceries.

Bryanston Market

Order by 2pm on a Monday for a Thursday morning delivery or collection from Joburg's leading organic market. Browse and order through the website for more than 300 products ranging from organic fruit and vegetables from small local farms to free-range meat and dairy, vegan foods, pulses and grains, fresh artisanal bread and healthy snacks.
Find out more about what's on sale and how to order here.

Fournos

Consistently voted Johannesburg's best bakery and deli, Fournos has reopened its food retail (the cafe remains closed) with a great selection of cheeses, sauces, cold meats, fantastic breads and pastries as well as the most delicious rotisserie chicken.
Branches which are open during lockdown include Dunkeld West Centre, BluBird Centre in Birnam, Bedfordview, Little Falls, Mall of the South and Southgate.

Cheese Gourmet

Friendly and highly knowledgeable service and an excellent selection of farmhouse food products from across the country, are the hallmark of this small deli in Linden. The Cheese Gourmet is one of the few places in Joburg that can actually lay claim to the title of stocking “artisanal products”, including more than 140 cheese varieties, preserves and cured meats produced with care.
Find them at 77 7th Street, Linden.

Super Sconto

Super Sconto was once the heart of Joburg's Little Italy in Orange Grove. While the Italian community is no longer centred around this area the store remains a go-to destination. The fresh lunches and famous homemade pizzas are off but this Italian food emporium still has a superb range of pastas, cheeses, olive oils and Italian imports.
Find them at 169-171 Louis Botha Ave (cnr 5th St), Orange Grove.

Publik wine bar

Yup, as you can imagine they are definitely not selling wine (sob!) but one of our favourite wine bars, Publik in Rosebank is also licenced as a deli,  doing deliveries only. You can order fresh produce boxes (10 veg, 3 types of fruit, 6 free range eggs, 1 bread), packets of Father Coffee, deli cheese boxes (3 cheeses and olives), deli meat boxes (4 meats and olives) plus additional add-ons of pickles. Find out more about arranging your delivery on their Instagram page.

Impala Fruit & Veg

This fruit and veg emporium in Northcliff is famous throughout the West Rand for having the biggest selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and other fresh goodness at amazing prices. Happily for everyone they have remained open throughout lockdown.
Find them at Impala Centre, 177 Beyers Naudé Dr, Northcliff.

The Leopard+

The Leopard + Kitchen + Larder + Can Do is a small deli located in the courtyard of Milpark's boutique shopping centre 44 Stanley (currently closed during the lockdown), which also has at the nearby Rand Steam shopping centre. The 44 Stanley branch is currently closed but the Rand Steam branch remains open. You can also order food from The Leopard online at leopardfoodcompany.com to get delivered to your home. Great for high quality locally produced ingredients that have a focus on sustainability and delicious heat-up or just go ahead and serve take-home meals, so good you'll want to tell your family you made them yourself.
Visit the Rand Steam branch at Rand Steam, corner Barry Hertzog and Napier Streets, Richmond.

The Refillery

This 'plant-friendly' grocers based in Morningside is a 'weigh and pay' plastic-free shop selling a wide range of cereals, grains, pulses, pasta, rice, teas and coffees as well as 'superfoods' like chia seeds and baobab powder. You can also order online at therefillery.co.za.
Stores at Morningside Shopping Centre and Cedar Square in Fourways.

Bean There

You can't drink a coffee cup made by one of their baristas at their 44 Stanley coffee shop, but a cup of Bean There Coffee at home is the next best thing. Buy their Fair Trade beans at Spar, Pick n Pay and Dischem or simply go to their website beanthere.co.za and they'll deliver to you.

La Marina Foods

This established food wholesaler in a Modderfontein office park is not on any major city route but if you travel for Epicurean delights they have it all – including locally-made pestos, whole smoked salmons, French black cherries and exotic teas. They now also deliver. Email Marketing@lamarinafoods.co.za to request their full 'menu' of items they deliver.
La Marina's food emporium is located at 7 Platinum Dr, Longmeadow North Business Park, Modderfontein.
