Soul Souvlaki Maboneng

This authentic double-story souvlaki shop (the top floor is an open deck looking over the streets of Maboneng) is located in a cleverly reconstructed shipping container. It’s come a long way since owner Dino Vlachos started out working a market stall at Maboneng’s Sunday Market on Main in 2012, drawing the crowds with his freshly made Greek street food.

While lamb or chicken souvlaki (meat pieces drenched in tzatziki with fresh tomatoes, red onion and rocket and wrapped up snugly in a freshly baked gyro) is still the star of the show here, the opening of the roof deck, a superb place to watch the world pass by in Maboneng, has brought with it more menu items and a reason to linger.

For lunch create your own meze by choosing small plates of grilled haloumi, chill feta, tarama and tzatziki dips, chicken or lamb kebabs, or try the substantial kebab plates, beef patties or mixed grill. Make sure to specify how you would like your meat cooked.

From 07:30 daily you can enjoy a freshly ground Ethiopian bean coffee with pastries, and toasted sandwiches are also on the menu. Late afternoon Soul Souvlaki is a cool bar from which to watch the sun set over the city, while listening to some easy tunes drifting out across Albrecht Street.

Also at 339 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall.
