What started off as a humble backpackers hostel in a family home, has expanded over the years into a thriving business employing dozens of locals that includes the famous (and much imitated) Lebo's Soweto Bicycle Tours and other tour experiences that include walking and tuk tuk tours, as well as traditional cookery classes, fireside storytelling evenings, morning yoga classes and the delightful Lebo's Open Air Restaurant.
The original backpackers property has everything you could need including a choice of well-appointed single and double rooms, a kitchen for self-catering, or the option of cooked breakfasts, home-style meals and braais as well as a super fun beach shack style bar in the yard. We are fans of the delicious potjie stews cooked up for lunch at Lebo's Open Air Restaurant, which is also a fantastic space for an lazy Saturday afternoon drink on a hammock.
Owner and founder Lebo Malepa has a green thumb and has transformed what was once local dumping ground next to the backpackers in this friendly and safe corner of the famous suburb of Orlando West (once home to the Mandela family), into a green oasis that now has space for children to play and a community farm whose organic veggies can be found in the pot at the restaurant.
Passionate about bringing adventurous and accessible outdoor experiences to new audiences, Lebo's have also built the amazing Leboland, a fully-fledged campsite with cosy chalets or the option to pitch your own tent. A brilliant and affordable place for a weekend away with friends, weekend stays at Leboland include breakfast and guided sunset bike rides through the streets of Soweto.
You'll find Lebo and his team the most consummate hosts with excellent knowledge of Soweto's well-known and not so well-known attractions and a knack for making you feel instantly at home.If you've been thinking recently about South African experiences that you need to add to your local travel 'bucket list', a stay at Lebo's Soweto Backpackers is certainly one of them.
