It is estimated that 1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during their lifetime, a number that is equal to a horrifying one billion women and girls. Launched in 2012, every February (timed to coincide with 'V Day' (Valentine's Day)), the global One Billion Rising movement come together in communities across the world to highlight just what one billion women looks like, shining a light on the shocking injustice faced by survivors of abuse and the need to come together to actively confront these unthinkable levels of violence.

This year's One Billion Rising campaign is themed 'Rising Gardens'. Described as "a defiant creative call for revival, restoration and transformation" it centres the need to nurture and care for our earth and recognise and value the interdependent relation of nature and humanity, and in particular the women who make up the majority of the population who work the land.

Activists in Joburg this year will be working in The Wilds Nature Reserve, installing over a series of weeks a site-specific land art installtion, the Garden of Yarns. 'A flower bed of creative resistance', the garden will include natural installations such as love leaves, petal poems and pebble pockets, a bed of 'roses against violence' and an avenue of rescued tree trunks which will be wrapped in yarns.

Slowly revealing over several weeks, in order to comply with lockdown restrictions no events will take place in the garden. Instead artivists and performers will be creating poetry, storytelling and dance activations performed at the garden and shared on social media.

Crafters who would like to submit works for the installation have until February 5 to take part. To find out how you can get involved contact artist @curious_sleuth here via her Instagram page.
