The Greenhouse

For a city of its size, Joburg has surprisingly few dedicated gay bars. Opened in late 2019 The Greenhouse in Rosebank joins the grungy Ratz bar in Melville, and the Babylon nightclub and Beefcakes drag bar down the road at the Thrupps centre as one of only a handful of full-time gay bars in the city, adding some much-needed variety to the local LGBTI scene.

A classy cocktail and wine bar located on the ground floor of one of Rosebank's newer office blocks (the bp building at the corner of Jellicoe Avenue), the name is a nod to the bar's impressive feature garden walls and ceilings. The owners describe the setting as an 'urban oasis' although the bounty of ferns descending from the ceiling also brings to mind a jungle, albeit one with cute millennial pink and rose gold accents.

On a warm evening the wide-open terrace is a great after-work stop to soak up a glass or two from the excellent wine list. In addition to wine, bubbly and cocktails there's also a menu of contemporary tapas-sized small plates and on Saturday's, a brunch and bubbly offering.

The music is a blend of upbeat jazzy-disco house beats with DJ sets on weekends, the staff are cute and friendly and the crowd is a diverse mix of well-heeled, good-looking and mildly flirtatious men and women.

If coming by car heed the complicated directions to access the car park. From Oxford Road turn into Eastwood Road, the entrance to the car parking will be directly on your left. To gain entry into the building press the bell icon and the up arrow to summon the lift. When the lift arrives get out at 'G' and go straight ahead via the glass doors. The bar will be on your right. Don't forget to ask the staff to validate your parking ticket so you can get out again at the end of the night.
