The Joburg Fringe 2018 art fair runs from Thursday October 25 to Sunday November 4 at independent galleries across the city, from Victoria Yards to Soweto, with every show completely free of charge to the public. Over a dozen countries are represented with artists from South Africa and the wider African continent, Asia, Europe and South America, producing contemporary multi-media work, such as video, live performance, photography, illustration, pottery and more.
The Art Room at the corner of 4th Avenue and 7th Street in Parkhurst is the central hub for Joburg Fringe 2018 with a group showcase of many of the featured artists on display for the duration of the fair (open Thur Oct 25–Sat Nov 3; Mon–Thu 09:00–17:00; Fri 09:00–16:00; Sat 09:00–14:00). The Art Room is also opening until 21:00 for a special edition of First Thursdays on November 1.
At Victoria Yards in Lorentzville Joburg Fringe is hosting a number of satellite shows including: Interpreting the Intangible, a live music and physical performance fusion event at The Project Space curated by Mbali Tshabalala (open Fri Oct 26–Sun Oct 28 09:00–18:00), Taking a Stand at Primal Spirits curated by Sarie Potter and featuring new work by James Nilsen-Misra, Brett Seiler and Wonder (open Sat Oct 27–Sun Nov 4 from 10:00); and a joint photography exhibition by Michelle Loukidis and Kaelik Dullaart at The Lens Collective (open Sat Oct 27–Sun Nov 4 10:00– 16:00).
Also look out for a special exhibition in nearby Troyeville curated by artist Andrew Lindsay at his Spaza Art Gallery (open Sun Oct 28 12:00–18:00), an exhibition by Phumelele Kunene and Naledi Segale at The Thesis Lifestyle store in Soweto (open Sat Oct 13–Sun Nov 4 Mon–Sat 10:00–19:00; Sun 10:00–18:00) and the Young Capital show in Linden which showcases the pottery of young artists from the Casa do Sol School for Learners with Special Educational Needs in Linden (Casa do Sol School, Sun Oct 28 10:00-16:00).
