One of the best nightlife experiences in Joburg. Johannesburg has a long jazz history that had its golden age in Sophiatown (a nearby suburb) in the 1950s which produced greats like trumpeter Hugh Masekela and chanteuse Miriam Makeba who both went on to become global superstars. Today jazz lives at The Orbit in Braamfontein with nightly performances that bring a mix of sounds and genres to the stage.

All the biggest names in South African jazz can be found both on stage and in the audience at this highly respected jazz club dedicated to promoting the best in jazz, funk and blues, among other genres.

A slick bistro greets you downstairs with a menu that focuses on using South African ingredients with a twist inspired by the chef's European travels, while upstairs the bar and a stage surrounded by tables await. Reservations for these are advised. Also downstairs The Orbit’s records shop sells the albums of every musician who has performed on its stage, stocking both jazz legends like Tu Nokwe and emerging stars such as Dumza Maswana.

As well as jazz gigs, The Orbit also hosts regular events such as the excellent monthly Science & Cocktails evening and the En Fuego salsa night with a live salsa band. Check out the weekly concert schedule on The Orbit website.
