ABOUT THE SOCIAL IMPACT ARTS PRIZE
The inaugural award in 2020 saw the competition opened up to proposals for a site-specific art project to be created in the Karoo town of Graaff Reinet, with the winners being supported to visit the town to establish their winning projects. The competition drew proposals from all corners of the creative sphere, including fine artists, architects, graphic designers, musicians, composers and poets. In 2020 three winning finalists were awarded the opportunity to bring their artistic proposals to life.
The 2020 winners presented an exciting array of projects that spoke to the history and culture of the town and highlighted the various challenges facing Graaff Reinet as a result of the climate crisis. The winning works ranged from an installation that shared local traditional knowledge about medicinal plants, and a mass choir programme that produced a new composition themed around the climate crisis, to an artificial rain cloud installation that also functions as a free community wifi hub.
