The Table Melville

From the maker of The Countess Melville comes this harvest table eatery with a focus on bountiful offerings of freshly prepared dishes that taste like the best of home made. Fresh is the key word with the menu changing daily to showcase locally sourced ingredients.

From carnivores to vegans, there's plenty of choices for breakfast or lunch. We tried the breakfast offering and were impressed by the range of egg dishes, the best muesli ever, freshly pressed juices, a selection of local cheeses and just-baked bread and delicious pastries sourced from 27 Boxes' Baker Brothers (that attracts early morning queues for their loaves). The lunch table offers up a mix of salads, bakes, slow-cooked stews and roasted vegetable dishes. It's all serve yourself – a nice way to eat as you get to try lots of different tastes.

This is clean eating, what owner Leon Pretorius describes as “Fresh-that-day, not high in fat, lower carbs, less meats, more vegetables, whole foods, with less waste and careful sourcing of ingredients.”

Pretorius is a firm supporter of building his local community and to that end sourced everything from the tableware to the restaurant's leafy green indoor plants from neighbours trading at 27 Boxes.

The Table Melville is light and airy inside and the tables spill out into the pretty playground and garden area of Melville's shipping container complex. It's a perfect destination for families as kids will have their hands full, and there are also plenty of interesting stores to browse after your meal. It's also an ideal place to enjoy a relaxed meal outdoors, something for which many Joburgers are often on the hunt or to hang out and work with Wi-Fi and coffee.
