Thunder Walker

  Gandhi Square, City Centre ,   City Centre          +27 82 894 5216     28 Jul 2020
The beautiful heritage building Somerset House on Gandhi Square, now known as the Thunder Walker, is a multi-functional space run by local tour company JoburgPlaces that takes advantage of the historic building’s many period features. The building on Gandhi Square is linked to the adjacent street by a unique early 20th Century tiled arcade and has been transformed by JoburgPlaces in partnership with building owners Olitiziki Property Holdings and now hosts an underground bar, tasty cafe and a unique events venue.

After being closed for several months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as of July 28 the Thunder Walker is reopening to the public for lunch and shopping Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 to 15:00.

At the heart of the Thunder Walker building is the gloriously sunny Scatterlings Arcade. With its gleaming majolica tiles, wrought iron balconies and abundant potted palms, it's a delightful space to enjoy a light lunch and a drink from the cafe. As well as coffee, tea and soft drinks The Scatterlings Cafe also serves what the Thunder Walker call 'tocktails' - non-alcoholic tasting cocktails created with locally made zero-alcohol spirits. If you need to stock up your fridge at home, there's also now a small deli where you can buy Scatterling's tasty pan-African lunches to heat and eat at home.

Sharing space with the cafe in the arcade is the Town Treasures shop which sells an array of beautiful antiques, books and other items such as printworks by local artists, traditional Ndebele blankets, hand-woven baskets, colourful African shweshwe masks and accessories, traditional Ethiopian ceramics and exquisite Persian carpets, all sourced from local inner-city small businesses.

Downstairs in the building's basement, the old bank vaults of the United Building Society have been turned into the Zwipi Underground Bar, a quirky space set amid hundreds of Edwardian safety deposit boxes and is the venue for Joburg Places' popular storytelling evenings. Please note that due to the Coronavirus pandemic the Zwipi Underground Bar is currently closed.
