Melville's quirky 27 Boxes, a shopping development built entirely from shipping containers located just off busy 7th Street, stands as a testament to the suburb's independent spirit. Filled with small independent shops selling everything from vintage clothing to fun gifts referencing South African pop culture, there's also a good choice of places to drop by for lunch or to get some treats to take home.
Run by Portuguese-South African owner and chef Daniel Ribiero, this friendly cafe and coffee shop serves delicious cafe fare with a distinct Portuguese flavour. The simple chalkboard menu lists a regularly changing selection of beautifully presented daily specials, or opt for one of the many salads displayed on the counter. Don't leave without trying the traditional homemade pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts). Open 09:00–17:00. Closed Mon.
South Africans love their chicken and many would argue that the wings are the tastiest part of the bird. The sign does not lie, this little cafe has wings and then some. If you can handle the heat there are some seriously spicy wings on offer, as well as tamer flavourings for the more cautious diner, all grilled to perfection. Have Wings is also licensed, because nothing goes better with a finger-licking good plate of wings than a nice cold craft beer. Open 11:00–20:00, Sun 11:00–19:00.

Drop into this friendly bakery for the best freshly-baked breads this side of Joburg. Brothers Sam, Tari, Takunda, and Tafara all studied Italian and French baking techniques and their most popular specialty is their famous Italian ciabatta breads (arrive early to get your hands on them after they've just left the oven). They also have great sourdough bread plus interesting vegan and gluten-free options.
The Melville home of the iconic cronut – an addictive croissant-doughnut hybrid. X&O's cronuts come in a variety of inventive and enticing flavours including salted caramel, cinnamon buttercream and the classic South African milk tart. Everything tastes as good as it looks and if you want to go for the full sugar rush you can also order a 'crazy shake', a decadent milkshake served with a cronut on top. Open 10:00-18:00, Sun 10:00-16:30.
