JoziCoffeeSpots Dog-friendly coffee shops in Joburg

more than a year ago
Joburg loves coffee and there are scores of brilliant spots across the city where you can pick up a seriously good barista-made coffee. Our coffee columnist Rachel Leigh Dzenga (aka @jozicoffeespots on Instagram) is a Joburg coffee guru and every month keeps us updated on the latest spots to get your caffeine fix.

This month she shares her favourite pet-friendly coffee shops. Wherever you choose to go, remember to keep your dog on a leash at all times and make sure to clean up after them too.

Bird Coffee Co., Birdhaven

Bird Coffee Company is a grab-and-go coffee truck located on St. Andrew Street, steps away from James and Ethel Gray Park in Birdhaven. Open from 06:00 during the week, and 06:30 on Saturdays, it's a handy spot to grab an early morning caffeine fix after a brisk walk or jog through the park. They offer superb quality coffee from Seam Coffee roasters, fresh croissants from La Maison du Croissant and famous Kleinskys Delicatessen bagels from Cape Town.

Croft and Co, Parkview

This dog-friendly cafe is popular with the suburb's early morning joggers and cyclists. The delicious casual brunch and lunch menu has everything from shakshuka and home-styled crumpets to Prego rolls and toasted sandwiches. Open from 06:00 it's an ideal spot if you are an early morning dog walker, especially as it is just around the corner from the Zoo Lake park.

Cult Coffee Co, Kramerville

Formerly known as Flynn Coffee, this trendy coffee bar is attached to the Coricraft Store in the heart of the Kramerville design precinct and has a sunny outdoor seating area where you can enjoy your coffee while your hound wolfs down a "puppuccino" (a mini whipped cream cup). As well as speciality coffee they also have plenty of freshly baked goods and gourmet sandwiches and are ideally placed for exploring Kramerville's many design stores.

DC Coffee Co, Lonehill

DC Coffee is a local neighbourhood coffee shop in Lonehill that prides itself on serving good coffee and “brewing kindness” with feel-good initiatives like a 'pay it forward' wall. The quirky interior decor pieces, comfortable seating and lots of board games make for a cosy spot to hang out for an afternoon. They really love dogs here (really!) and there's an entire special menu for them that includes "doggycinos" (frothed milk with treats added) and organic dog snacks from Mimi & Munch SA. Even better yet all profits from their doggy menu go towards Dogtown SA, a local dog rescue centre.

From Ground Up Cafe is a family and pup-friendly cafe in the heart of Fourways, just off of Witkoppen Road. There's lots of open space outside for your dog to run around (on a leash) and the speciality coffee from Beethoven Coffee is great. Goddess Cafe, Linden

In September 2021 Pretoria coffee shop Goddess Cafe opened their Joburg branch. Pretty in pink is the name of the game with everything from the flowers and decor to the cakes taking on shades of pink. Try the Spanish latte, made with condensed milk, espresso shots and coloured frothed milk of your choice. For your pet, not only are there abundant water bowls, they even have a full dog's dinner menu that includes four meal options based on chicken, rice and vegetables.

Loof Coffee, Greenside

A favourite with early morning runners and cyclists in leafy Greenside, Loof Coffee boasts a small takeaway store out front and in the back a huge sunny courtyard. The speciality coffee is excellent, particularly when paired with one of their home-baked treats, or items from the delicious brunch menu. After taking your pup out for an early morning run, drop by for a coffee while your pooch refreshes from one of the doggy water bowls.

Decadent brunch options include the toasted espresso waffle and ice-cream, peanut butter and jelly oats, or their famous pastrami sarmie, perfectly paired with a cup of Bean There coffee. Grab one of the streetside tables and order a creamy puppuccino to keep your pet happy while you soak up the scene.
