The play by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg (1972) is about the cult of beauty and its stereotypes. The protagonist of the story is a scientist named Lette, a rational minded man of work, who married a charming woman and lives a normal and fulfilling life. However, the scientist’s life turns out to be not so normal when his assistant is assigned to present the most important invention of Lette’s life, because Lette himself is … ugly. That is why Lette decides to take a plastic surgery. There is nothing special about the surgery, which is a simple procedure for an ugly man to adapt to the world where standards of beauty are developed by the fashion industry, media and society. And only after removing the bondages Lette understood that there is such a thing as being too beautiful.
