Rising up 54m from the centre of the old town, the city's famed Bell Tower, will likely be the first sight visitors see no matter if they're arriving by road, rail or sea. Originally part of a Roman fortification, the tower was transformed into its present appearance between the 15th and 17th centuries, and has been used for liturgical purposes ever since. Panoramic views of the entire region (weather permitting of course) can be had by ascending 204 steps to reach the viewing platform at 43m.
