Many places in Krakow claim to be 'far from the maddening crowd'; this one is the real deal. On the northern edge of the Planty just seconds from the Słowacki Theatre, and a quickstep from the train station, it barely seems feasible, yet it's true. Dating back to 1826(!), this is one of the oldest cafes in town. Sip a coffee or beer on the glorious terrace amidst owlish art academy alums and retired actors, surrounded by leafy trees and chirping sparrows and muse on how peaceful the city is, before heading off into the madness once more. Featuring an outdoor gallery of work from the Academy of Fine Arts, Zakopianka is a treasure.
