How do you encapsulate a vast, vibrant, and ever-changing city such as Istanbul? Situated right between Europe and Asia, the massive metropolis has a lengthy history of contrasts and tensions—between culture and politics, history and modernity. This exhibit presents over 7,000 photographs gathered from prominent Turkish cultural institutions, captured by many leading 19th-century Istanbul photographers. The photographs present us with an unadulterated view into the dynamic developments and transformations incurred by the city at the turn of the 20th century, meanwhile telling us a story of the everyday lives of the city's residents, contextualising them within greater historical and political changes. The photographs are complemented by paintings and engravings by Polish artists who were also fascinated with the city.
