Jan Matejko's 1855 painting titled 'Veit Stoss as a Child' will be exhibited to the public for the first time since Matejko's jubilee exhibition in 1938. The painting was a gift from the teenage painter to Dr. S. Kopczyński, and was his first work devoted to Veit Stoss (1447-1533) - the German sculptor, painter and printmaker most famous for creating the altarpiece of St. Mary’s Basilica in Kraków. The portrait depicts a boy leaning against a book and holding a chisel. In 1855, when an 18-year-old Matejko created the canvas, he was already the author of numerous sketches, studies and portraits, but also several of the large historical paintings for which he would become most famous, including 'Henry Valois Entering Krakow' and 'Ladislaus Jagiello before the Battle of Grunwald.’
