Literally meaning "Clowns," the 2-act Italian opera Pagliacci is the only one of Leoncavallo's remaining works that is still widely performed today. This year, the Krakow Opera stage producers have decided to pair it with a performance of Gianni Schicchi, a one-act comic opera by Giacomo Puccini. Cleverly enough, the two pieces focus on the extremes of human emotions and their destructive, catastrophic, and devastating qualities. In Pagliacci, lust, love, and jealousy are what bring about the characters' demise; in Gianni Schicchi, it's all about money and greed, which are made more palatable with a comedic delivery.
