Not only is Ljubljana a magnificent city and hugely popular with foreign tourist for short breaks, but its central location makes it super-easy for those wishing to explore other parts of the country, even if time is limited. In just a few short hours and by any method of transport visitors can enjoy a day trip further afield to discover some fascinating places of interest that would otherwise remain unseen.
Polzela lies near to a famous ancient crossroads, connecting the Celje Basin with the Upper Savinja Valley, approximately 60 kilometres from Ljubljana. It lies on the left bank of the Savinja River, the area surrounding and encompassing Polzela, is a hilly, forestry one, good for walking, hiking and cycling. A delightful mix of history, industry, nature and mystery? Polzela gets the double thumbs up from us.

Komenda Castle
First mentioned way back in 1149, Komenda Castle is undoubtedly the sightseeing highlight in and around Polzela. Owned by the Knights of Malta from 1323 until 1780, the castle has seen plenty of different stories throughout its long and tumultuous history. It isn’t hard to see why it has been fought over so passionately, what with its commanding position and important cultural and architectural history. Its most unique feature is undoubtedly the lion made of Pohorje marble, found on the staircase railing above the entrance gate. A portrait of France Prešeren is found on a bronze plaque, commemorating the great bard’s time here between 1817 and 1819.
The Mount of Olives
Sitting 734m above the sea, the peak of Slovenia’s Mount of Olives is one of the most peaceful spots in the entire country. The hill takes its name from the main altar inside its Church of the Cross, which depicts Jesus on the famous Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem. The church was built in 1757 and is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture, a splendid construction with two proud spires sat at a point from which the whole area can be viewed. This inspiring spot dominates the region around Polzela, grace and elegance personified.
Collection of Old Tractors
One of the most unique museums in the country, to say the least. Ernest Obermayer has been collecting tractors for over twenty years, finding them all over Slovenia and bringing them back this collection in Polzela, even going so far as to restore some. The centrepiece of the collection is the 1952 Mercedes-Benz, with a wooden chassis waiting underneath the metal body.
Funny Clay Figurines
Since 2007 an exhibition of Funny Clay Figurines has sat in Andraž, the work of a Ljubljana native by the name of Miran Cobal. The figurines present many iconic literary characters, from the Good Soldier Švejk to Martin Krpan, along with famous social events from the region and beyond. There are also a number of donated works from academic painter Aljož Zavolovšek in an exhibition found in the Residents’ Home.
