We don't want to depress you, but each year in the EU some 88m tons of food is wasted – that's 173kg per person and some €143bn in value (and for any Americans reading this, you shouldn't feel any better, as your country wastes even more per capita). Luckily, in recent years various initiatives have been set up to tackle this problem, including one by the folks behind Robin Food. The clever name is matched by a clever concept, which uses a multi-pronged approach to reducing food waste in Slovenia. While their main work is providing donated surplus food to people in need, they also partially fund their operations by selling directly to consumers.

In Ljubljana, you can find their cosy café on the same street as Dragon Bridge, just a few minutes walk in the direction of the train station. They serve up various wraps, grilled sandwiches, soups, baked goods and other tasty treats, all made from perfectly fine ingredients that usually just have damaged packaging or are close to their expiration date. A Zero Waste Food Shop is scheduled to open in Ljubljana in autumn 2017, and lots more info is available on their website, including how to donate or volunteer.
