Lucerne's former central prison is now a hotel and its location near the old town makes it an ideal place to stay for backpackers. The prison was built in 1862 and was in operation until 1998. It's named after an artist who was imprisoned here until 1975 because he refused to submit to compulsory military service. He left a painting in one of the cells, which is still there today. In fact, he painted everything he missed during his stay in prison including women, money and wine. And yes, you'll be sleeping in a former cell, so don't expect much comfort, but rather small rooms with tiny windows and heavy doors. But don't worry, beds are much more comfortable than back in the day. The hotel also has an outside boulevard café, a cosy courtyard and a recreation room where you can play table football, billiards or darts. They also do breakfast (and not just bread and water ) and there's even a bar where you can get beer and other drinks. Definitely a special experience.
