PROSE is an opera by longtime Stanislavsky Electrotheatre collaborator Vladimir Rannev. It is based on two texts performed simultaneously, Yury Mamleev’s “The Bridegroom” and fragments of Anton Chekhov’s “The Steppe.” The former is presented visually, the latter in vocal form. Mamleev’s story explores what happens after a couple loses their daughter in an accident. They seek salvation by adopting the imbecilic truck driver who hit and killed their daughter. In the section from “The Steppe,” a young boy travels to be raised by distant relatives, with whom he must learn to live in this world. We see the two characters blend into a single person, captured at different moments in life, before and after entering the world of human relationships. Shortly after its premiere, critics proclaimed Prose a major step forward in the development of new Russian opera. It won the Casta Diva award for 2018. The play is performed in Russian with English subtitles.
