Peter Mammes - It’s already too late once the soldiers have arrived

London-based South African artist Peter Mammes' latest exhibition It’s already too late once the soldiers have arrived was inspired by an extended stay in Cairo.

Mammes' ongoing research process involves him working for months in a location to assimilate the local culture (previous exhibitions were inspired by his stays in Russia and India). His work juxtaposes the romanticisation of foreign cultures with their modern chaotic realities.  Using patterns and motifs, Mammes attempts to capture Egypt’s ancient allure while acknowledging the militarism and insecurity of Egypt’s post-Arab Spring era.

The characters in Mammes’ collage-like paintings are eerily familiar; political icons and disgraced leaders, wounded fighters, nurses, doctors and decaying animals make appearances with Mammes interrogating what lasting political power would look like and how power structures are maintained at the expense of reason.
