From all indications, Śledzik u Fabrykanta should be a popular spot on bustling Piotrkowska. The space itself is maybe a little overly-bright and sterile for late night beer-fueled shenanigans, but the long stone bar is inviting and the menu of hot and cold Polish snacks pairs well with pints. That said, all we found lurking inside were a few well-behaved patrons who appeared to be pre-gaming for wilder times elsewhere.

This relates generally to the Polish snacks and shots section.Understanding zakąski and przekąski are key to understanding Polish drinking culture, in that culturally, its seen as bad to drink alone, rather than with others and also not on an empty stomach. Drinking vodka the Polish way necessitates drinking a glass of vodka (kieliszek) down in one, at the same time as your friends, followed by a snack. This ritual proceeds through the bottle (or bottles).As the article suggests, tapas, is a far more accurate way to describe the purpose of the snacks and appetisers, than the English understanding of the words.

This has become very popular and is a large cheap bar (Tyskie and Żubr4 zloty) but its much more an out and out bar than eatery. Having said that there is something uncomfortably sinister about the place with its insistence (apparently from the owner) that drinks are paid for before they are actually poured. This while not a big deal in itself does speak volumes about the contempt the owners have in their attitude to their customers.Far better choices with much more decent and respectful service all over Łódź but ironically this contemptuous approach far better echoes Poland's communist "Peoples" Republic past than the style the bar purports to effect.What next chaining glasses to the bar?
