Fulham v Piast GliwiceThe Wednesday game, which kicks off at 5pm at the City Stadium in Opalenica, next to the Hotel Remes Sport and Spa complex, sees Fulham take on Polish side Piast Gliwice. Gliwice, from the Katowice conurbation in the south of the country, had a disappointing 2016/17 season finishing in the bottom half of the table. Although they were well clear of the relegation places, ultimately filled by Ruch Chorzow and Gornik Leczna, the season was a disappointment following their exploits the previous season when they fought for the title and finished second in the table which earned them qualification for the Europa League. While a full-strength Fulham side should be able to deal with last season’s Piast team, the fact that this match represents one of Piast’s last warm-ups before the Polish season begins for them against Cracovia on Saturday July 15 means our lads could be in for a bit of a test.
To get to the ground from Poznan, you’ll need to take a train from Poznan Glowny (Poznan Main Station). Ticket prices will vary depending on the type of train and the class of ticket, but the most expensive is going to cost around 40zl return (around €10). Do allow time to get your ticket as there can sometime be long queues at the windows and have the destination, Opalenica and the time of your train(s) written down on a piece of paper just in case the cashier can’t understand your gesticulations.
The journey takes just over 30 mins and the train schedule for before and after the match can be found above.
You’ll need to take a taxi from outside of the train station in Opalenica as the ground is about 3km away. This is where it could get a bit interesting. There's unlikely to be any cabs waiting outside the station so the local number for a taxi is +48 601 55 72 07. The key words required here will be 'dworzec' (dvor-zhets) and 'Hotel Remes'. If you struggle to get yourself understood, give the Hotel Remes a ring where you'll definitely find an English-speaker who will help. Expect to pay no more than 25 zloty (about €6 Euros). As always, a bit of local language never hurts so try ‘Do Hotelu Remes. Ile to kostuje? (Doh hotel re-mes, ee-leh toh cost-oo-yeh?). This means 'How much does it cost to the Hotel Remes?'
The best advice for pre-match is to go directly to the hotel itself. It has an excellent bar and restaurant and you're just a couple of minutes walk from the pitch. Having called the venue it appears that entry to the game will be free of charge.
Fulham v FC ZlinOn the Saturday, Fulham will make the short journey to the town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski located about 12km south of their training base. Here they’ll play 2017 Czech Cup Winners FC Zlin at the Groclin Stadium with kick-off at 5pm.
You can get to the town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski from Poznan using road or rail. Trains leave from Poznan Main Station all through the day with the journey taking about an hour. There’s fewer trains to and from Grodzisk Wielkopolski with only one real option for the return train which departs at 8.15pm.
