Food Box

After years of searching for a great kebab in Riga, we’ve finally found one at Food Box. This small, casual eatery offers delicious yet inexpensive döner kebabs, falafel and exotic pide (a 'pizza' of sorts) served by a young Turkish entrepreneur. The only drawback seems to be the crowds at lunchtime. The hot sauce here is also refreshingly spicy, and not toned down for local palates like at other kebab joints, and free tea is available from a community samovar.

Nice food for a reasonable price. I would just like to have a little more alternatives for sauces and garnishes that's all about food. But there are lot's to say about design. could be a little better really. Anyway best in Riga till now.

though they have delicious kebabs the service can be a bit hit and miss - while the owner's Turkish buddies got their food in just a few minutes I was waiting for half an hour (!) for a plate of fries.

hahaha Santa. What a stupid comment. If you want everything to be like in Germany why you come to Riga?Food box is quality. Have had good kebabs in Germany, UK, France and now Latvia.

Maybe my problem was that I visit this place with friend who put my expectations in to high level. There was no chicken meat and i got kebab with some kind of strange sauce from mustard. Never ever has seen such sauce in Germany.

I am a seasoned traveler and an epicure. In July I traveled from southern hemisphere to north and to Riga. I also sampled food at this recently opened eatery, not far from the finest collection of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architectural buildings where tourists hang out. A really good food is a treat, so if there is a queue you know you are in for something special. I totally agree with the acclaim of the local food critique’s review above and noticed the warmth that exudes from the tall, dark owner/chef with passion for food and healthy eating. He prepared Turkish favorite fast food by shaping dough before us and then baking and serving hot off the oven, hence the freshness was at its best. I favored the gold crusted meat and cheese combo pita and was impressed by the choice of quality cheese and good balance of fresh herbs and spices in the tantalizing and mouth-watering, perfectly browned, chunks of tender beef shavings. Special mention goes to his yogurt based salad dressing, perfumed with subtle flavor of dill, and a menu ranging from kebabs to thick soups. I want to make a note to put this newly opened hip eatery on the list of “must visit places in Riga” for hunger induced tourists walking the nearby Art Nouveau cultural heritage sites. Food box has a busy future ahead of it. Noticing the present low prices (about Ls 3) I don’t think the locals can afford to eat at home any longer, either. With warm butter yellow walls, big screen LCD television, funky music, interesting decor and modern comfortable chairs, Food box is much much more than a humble fast casual eatery.
