Here are 5 Bulgarian based causes we believe are truly worth supporting, not least because we know about them through personal connections and can vouch for their integrity. So whether it is about making a donation, sponsoring a project, volunteering your time or buying unique hand-made items, there are many ways in which to help. You will find more information on how to help through their individual facebook pages.
Hot Lunches for Bulgarian Hospitals
"Hot Lunches For Bulgarian Hospitals” is a grassroots effort to support Bulgaria’s frontline workers by providing hot meals to as many hospital staff as possible during the current pandemic situation. Launched as recently as mid-November 2020 in Sofia by Svetla and Anne in memory of Svetla's father who passed from Covid-19, the initiative is rapidly gaining momentum as several restaurants in Sofia (which are currently only working for take out) have joined the efforts in providing hot lunches for medical staff working on the frontline. It is truly inspiring to see restaurants who themselves have been badly hit by the lockdown, contributing in their own way. The registered charity is accepting donations but also assistance with distribution, partnerships or other proposals are welcome.
Every child should have a fair chance to lead a happy, healthy and productive life.
The Pink Foundation operates a life transformation program built on a long term commitment to children and youth. Starting with kids as young as 3 years old and staying with them until they reach maturity. In addition to group activities, adult staff and volunteers set aside regular, individual time and attention for every child addressing 5 core diciplines: Socialisation, Education, Health & Hygiene, Community Service and Life Skills.
Pink Foundation are ideally looking for private and corporate sponsorship for the children, but smaller donations also through DMS PINK are very welcome
Tabitha Bulgaria Foundation
Tabitha Bulgaria Foundation is one of Bulgaria's longer established NGOs, assisting orphans, mentally and physically challenged and abandoned children in institutions, as well as other young people in need. To date they have helped more than 15 institutions with humanitarian aid, building renovations, refurbishments and furniture. Additionally they have launched educational and vocational training, life skills and social inclusion programs for more than 1500 young people. Every summer they organise camps and volunteer projects for young people from the Netherlands, UK and USA.
Their 'Granny (Baba) Project' has proven to be an invaluable long running success. Local retired women are hired to help two children from a social home, 3-4 hours a day, just like a real grandmother would care for them. The children receive a lot of affection and individual attention which aids their emotional and physical development. The women also receive payment and thus two marginalised groups benefit.
You can support their work through donations, also in kind, sponsoring a granny or just checking with the charity what their current needs are.
