The largest 'Kukeri' (Mummers) festival takes place in the town of Pernik, approximately 40 km south of Sofia on the last weekend of January. If you can brave the cold and the crowds, this will be a truly memorable event with the most incredible costumes, made from animal skins and bones,worn with heavy bells that make a deafening sound in order to chase away the bad spirits.
