Sopot

Fresh Fish on the Beach

more than a year ago
From late spring to late summer a whole host of wooden huts open up along the coast selling summer’s favourite meal – fish & chips. These huts, boarded up for a large part of the year, were pretty basic affairs but this has all changed in the last couple of years.

A competition, led by the office of President of Sopot, was held in 2013 to come up with some new designs for these huts. Three designs were chosen and tenants who wished to renew their rental agreements with the local government had to commit to rebuilding their huts to one of the chosen designs. The results are extremely impressive and the rebuilding programme along with a general tidying of the area between the beach and promenade has given the whole waterfront between gates 23-33 a much more impressive look. The modern huts now come with brand new food preparation areas, rooftop terraces in some cases and toilets that would shame some of the permanent restaurants in the city.

You’ll find a choice of fish which is pretty much the same right along the beach and will include (subject to availability) cod (dorsz), salmon (losos), halibut (halibut), trout (pstrąg) and flądra (flounder). Price and quality in each place varies from season to season with one of our favourites from one summer often turning into a disappointment the following year but the improved facilities (and not doubt the increased investment required) have seen prices and quality increase along the beach. As a rule expect to pay around 10zl per 100g for most types of fish. The numbers in Sopot run from #23, south of the pier, and rise until they get to the Gdansk border at Jelitkowo when a different set of numbers takes over.

Our favourites are the hut at gate #28 and the long-standing year-round restaurant Bulaj, found north of the pier at gate #13.
