Sopot Beaches | What To Do & Where To Dip!

30 Jan 2024
If it's not for the nightlife, they'll be comin' round the mountain for the beach! Sopot is coastal area that everyone visiting or residing in Poland makes a beeline for and it's not hard to see why. Founded as a resort in 1823 by the Alsatian doctor Jean Georg Haffner, there are countless tropical-themed beach bars like Tropikalna Wyspa, and a plethora of nightclubs further back. An embarrassing choice of Italian restaurants, the world's most-exported cuisine, is somehow fittingly-represented by the name of the main street, ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino (ENG: The Heroes of Monte Cassino) AKA Monciak. The legacy of Sopot's ongoing resort culture is reflected in the beautifull-tree-lined parks and leisure pier, apparently the longest in Europe. All this harks back to the day when Sopot was the preserve of the scurrilously wealthy, a reputation which earned it the nickname The Monte Carlo of the Baltic in the 1920s. But while you can gamble, party and chow on spaghetti in any other major city in Poland, Sopot is one a handful of places with sandy beaches and a true spirit of R&R.

What Beaches Are In Sopot?

The name of this article may be a little misleading as, technically, there is only one really long beach in Sopot, the centre of which is Sopot Molo. To the south, you will find more restaurants and bars and, eventually, it joins the Gdańsk district of Jelitkowo. To the north, you will find more parkland and a coastal trail that will eventually lead you to Gdynia. We prefer this end of things because you will find more space for yourself and, if you don't feel like swimming, you can take a walk amidst hinterland nature.

What to do at the beach in Sopot?

You can swim, of course! If you're privy to melanoma, then you can sunbathe for unessecarily lengths of time. There are plenty of snack shacks abound, with Bar Przystań rated as being one of the best fish bars in the whole country. As suits its resort image, the beach has endless opportunities for outdoor types; ranging from cruises on mock pirate boats to being dragged behind a speedboat on a banana. Beach football and volleyball tournaments take place pretty much each day, and August 4, 8 and 25 will see swimming races around the pier take place. If you fancy your chances you’ll need to register before 10:00 on the day of the race. Feeding the overly-friendly geese is also a real novelty for the kids, however, a recent campaign has been asking beachgoers to stop, as it causes wing deformities. In which case, go buy some real bird seed!
