The Scarlet Sails

Sunday Jun 23 - Monday Jun 24       Birzhevaya pl. 4
The Scarlet Sails festival was first held in 2005 and since then has become a much-anticipated annual celebration. And it’s no wonder! Just imagine this: a beautiful parade of vessels sails along the banks of the Neva to the sounds of classical music and fireworks. This parade is led by the ship “Rossiya” decked out with scarlet sails much like in a fairy tale “The Scarlet Sails” by Alexander Grin. The fairy tale tells the story of a young girl named Assol. It was predicted that she would meet a prince who would arrive on a ship with scarlet sails. A wealthy captain falls in love with Assol and learns of her story. He docks his ship with scarlet sails and makes Assol’s dreams come true. On June 23 see this wondrous sight for yourself.
