Priory Palace

  Gatchina, ul. Chkalova      (+7) 813 717 64 67     more than a year ago
Priory Palace is Gatchina’s architectural landmark. The Palace was constructed of rammed earth in 1799 and is the only palace of its kind in Russia. The palace's architect, Nikolay Lvov, was an outstanding enlightener of the 18th century, a talented engineer and inventor who excelled in a wide variety of fields. The Palace is now going through a new period in its existence. The most interesting exhibit here is the palace itself with its fascinating name, history and architecture. Efforts are being made to revive old traditions at Priory Palace. One of them relates to concerts at the Capella, which are now frequented by concert-goers who appreciate wonderful acoustics, a bright hall and excellent performances. The Museum (open Wednesday to Sunday) offers tours of the palace focusing on its history, the Maltese order, the building techniques used and the architect Lvov.
