A multitalented artist, teacher and member of the Leningrad organisation of the Union of Artists since 1965, Vatenin is one of the most important Russian artists of the Sixties and Seventies. His work features portraits, still lifes, and genre paintings and can be found in numerous exhibitions and private collections all over the world, from Russia to Japan, Italy and France. Vatenin, was one of the artists featured at the Exhibition of Eleven Artists, an exhibition held in Leningrad in 1972 and considered one of the most important fine art events at the time.
