Stara Ćuprija

more than a year ago
The George Harrison of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ottoman stone bridges, the Stara Ćuprija (Old Bridge) in Konjic is a gorgeous piece of work, a five-arch beauty that spans the elegant flowing of the ice-cold Neretva and provides a graceful point on which Bosnia and Herzegovina come together and embrace. The original was completed in 1683 by Ali-aga Hasečić, a high-ranking dignitary from Constantinople who devised the bridge and gave the orders from beginning to an end, although the charm of the walkway has long outlived the presence of its creator. It stood for centuries before the retreating Nazis destroyed it towards the end of World War II, and the Yugoslav government wasn’t interested in anything more than a temporary solution. The original design was lovingly restored in 2009, finally retaking its place at the top table of bridges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
