Brienzer Rothorn (2351m above sea level) offers breathtaking views of the Alps and features one of the more remarkable ways to go up or down a mountain - a steam-driven rack and pinion train that is still much as it was in 1891, when the railroad was built. Brienzer Rothorn is actually accessible from two sides, so you can easily make it a roundtrip from Lucerne. Just go up from Sörenberg by cable car and use the steam train for the descent to Brienz. In the steam train you’ll sit in open carriages and be able to take in breathtaking views of the Brienz and Thun lakes and the Bernese Alps on the slow ride down. At the top of the Rothorn is a restaurant and many hiking possibilities, not to mention quite a view!
